I’VE Tried to Understand the Book of Revelation, but it Makes No Sense to Me!

I’ve Tried Hard to Understand the Book of Revelation, But it Makes NO SENSE to me!

Having been a pastor and Bible teacher for more than fifty years, you can’t believe how many times I have heard Christian people, members of Bible-believing, Bible-teaching churches, say that. Most church members I have heard say something like that, were people who were loyal members of the local church, supporters of the ministry, faithful contributors and sincere believers – yet they admitted to basic ignorance when it came to an understanding of the most important Book of Prophecy in all the Bible!

Is it because the Book of Revelation is so difficult to comprehend? Is it because these Christians are not diligent enough in their study? Is something lacking in the teaching ministry of their local church? It could be one or more of these factors. Then too, it might be that many of these folks are just not all that interested in Bible prophecy. Whatever the reason may be, most such personal situations are the result of being hung up on the signs and symbols and figures of speech used in the Book of Revelation and throughout the Bible.

I had a pastor friend I went to Bible College with many years ago. He was pastoring a church ten or fifteen years later, but he was not well-grounded in the prophetic content of scripture. But he knew that was my most favorite biblical topic. One night he and his wife and my wife and I met together at a local restaurant for dinner and fellowship and he informed me that he was about to launch a series of messages on the Book of Revelation. I expressed my congratulations. Several months later we met again at the same restaurant. I asked my pastor friend how the “prophetic series” was going. He replied, “You mean my pathetic series?”

It wasn’t necessary to explain what he meant, but he went on to explain that he had announced his intention to the church family and urged all to attend each Sunday night service for the indefinite future as he would be preaching on the Book of Revelation. But after several weeks he discovered he was not so sure he was ready to teach on that final great Book of the Bible and suspended the series indefinitely. After much study, he was able to resume the series on Revelation once again. He told me he got hung up on all the symbols, signs and allegories used by the human author, the Apostle John.

I recount this story only to show that even Bible School and Seminary graduates sometimes have a problem discovering the meaning of Revelation. However, it is totally unnecessary because Revelation is the only Book of the Bible that pronounces a Special Blessing on all who read it and heed it. If you have a problem understanding what the Book of Revelation is all about there is help available. No Book of the Bible is more essential to read and understand as we face the final days of the endtimes.
